Extending Your Thinking
1.

How many different integers b b can you find so that the expression x 2 + 10 x + b x 2 + 10 x + b can be written in factored form?

Compare your answer:

Infinitely many. The number b b needs to have two factors that add up to 10. Here are some examples:

  • ( x + 4 ) ( x + 6 ) = x 2 + 10 x + 24 ( x + 4 ) ( x + 6 ) = x 2 + 10 x + 24
  • ( x + 2 ) ( x + 8 ) = x 2 + 10 x + 16 ( x + 2 ) ( x + 8 ) = x 2 + 10 x + 16
  • ( x + 11 ) ( x − 1 ) = x 2 + 10 x − 11 ( x + 11 ) ( x − 1 ) = x 2 + 10 x − 11

There are infinitely many examples because there are infinitely many pairs of integers whose sum is 10.

Notice the similarities between the two tables above. They both contain all of the factors of –40, where one factor is positive and the other is negative.

Notice the difference depends on the value of b b , the sum of the factors.

  • For positive values of b b , the factor with the larger absolute value is positive. The other factor is negative.
  • For negative values of b b , the factor with the larger absolute value is negative. The other factor is positive.
