Activity

Three Different Forms of Linear Equations

Work with a partner to answer questions 1 – 3.

1.

What is the slope-intercept form of a linear equation?

Compare your answer:

y = m x + b y = m x + b

2.

What is the point-slope form of a linear equation?

Compare your answer:

y − y 1 = m ( x − x 1 ) y − y 1 = m ( x − x 1 )

3.

What is the standard form of a linear equation?

Compare your answer:

A x + B y = C A x + B y = C

Using the Different Forms to Write Equivalent Equations

Linear equations can be written in the different forms to create linear equations. Use the linear equation forms from 1 - 3 to help you complete the rest of the activity. Remember to show all of your work on your paper and to use inverse operations to move terms to different sides of the equation.

For questions 4 – 5, use the equation y − 4 = 3 ( x + 1 ) y − 4 = 3 ( x + 1 ) .

4.

Write the equation in slope-intercept form.

Compare your answer:

y = 3 x + 7 y = 3 x + 7

5.

Write the equation in standard form.

Compare your answer:

3 x − y = − 7 3 x − y = − 7

6.

Write 4 x − 6 y = 12 4 x − 6 y = 12 in slope-intercept form.

Compare your answer:

y = 4 6 x − 2 y = 4 6 x − 2 orb y = 2 3 x − 2 y = 2 3 x − 2

Self Check

Which of the following is equivalent to y = 4 x + 5 y = 4 x + 5 in standard form?

4 x − y = − 5 4 x − y = − 5
− 4 x + y = 5 − 4 x + y = 5
x = 4 y + 5 x = 4 y + 5
y − 4 x = 5 y − 4 x = 5

Additional Resources

Writing Equivalent Linear Forms

Write an equation of a line in all three forms that has a slope of 2 and a y y -intercept of 7.

Slope-Intercept Form

  • Slope-intercept form is y = m x + b y = m x + b where m is the slope and b b is the y y -intercept.

Substitute m = 2 m = 2 and b = 7 b = 7 to have the equation y = 2 x + 7 y = 2 x + 7 .

Standard Form

Write the same equation in standard form.

  • Standard form is A x + B y = C A x + B y = C .

  • Remember that A A can not be negative and there should not be any fractions or decimals.

For this form, rearrange slope-intercept form to lead with the x x term:

Step 1 - Bring the x x and y y terms on the left side.

y − 2 x = 2 x − 2 x + 7 y − 2 x = 2 x − 2 x + 7

Step 2 - Simplify.

− 2 x + y = 7 − 2 x + y = 7

Step 3 - Divide all terms by -1 so that A A is not negative.

− 2 x − 1 + y − 1 = 7 − 1 − 2 x − 1 + y − 1 = 7 − 1

Step 4 - Simplify.

2 x − y = − 7 2 x − y = − 7

Point-Slope Form

  • Point-Slope form is y − y 1 = m ( x − x 1 ) y − y 1 = m ( x − x 1 ) .

  • Substitute the slope in for m m and the point in for ( x 1 , y 1 ) ( x 1 , y 1 ) .

m = 2 m = 2 , x 1 = 0 x 1 = 0 , y 1 = 7 y 1 = 7

y − 7 = 2 ( x − 0 ) y − 7 = 2 ( x − 0 )

Notice this can easily be written in slope-intercept form by solving for y y :

y − 7 = 2 ( x − 0 ) y − 7 = 2 x − 0 y − 7 + 7 = 2 x − 0 + 7 y = 2 x + 7 y − 7 = 2 ( x − 0 ) y − 7 = 2 x − 0 y − 7 + 7 = 2 x − 0 + 7 y = 2 x + 7

Standard Form to Slope-Intercept Form

Standard form can also be rearranged into slope-intercept form.

Write 3 x − 5 y = 14 3 x − 5 y = 14 in slope-intercept form.

Work to solve for y y .

Step 1 - Bring the x x term to the right side with the constant.

3 x − 3 x − 5 y = 14 − 3 x 3 x − 3 x − 5 y = 14 − 3 x

Step 2 - Simplify.

− 5 y = 14 − 3 x − 5 y = 14 − 3 x

Step 3 - Divide by the coefficient of y y .

− 5 y − 5 = 14 5 − 3 5 x − 5 y − 5 = 14 5 − 3 5 x

Step 4 - Simplify and write in the correct order.

y = − 3 5 x + 14 5 y = − 3 5 x + 14 5

Writing Equivalent Linear Forms

Write the equation 3 x + 8 y = 24 3 x + 8 y = 24 in slope-intercept form.

Compare your answer: y = − 3 x 8 + 3 y = − 3 x 8 + 3

3 x − 3 x + 8 y = 24 − 3 x 8 y = 24 − 3 x 8 y 8 = 24 8 − 3 x 8 y = − 3 x 8 + 3 3 x − 3 x + 8 y = 24 − 3 x 8 y = 24 − 3 x 8 y 8 = 24 8 − 3 x 8 y = − 3 x 8 + 3
